Gosh, we Ns seem to love reading new exciting things!
In the interests of sharing the knowledge (and extending procrastination possibilities) I propose a thread containing links to interesting articles, research etc that we come across. Maybe spark some discussion/debate
warning: I find a lot of stuff regularly
Today's article from the field of Evolutionary Psychology:
"Red Suits Her: Men show increased sexual desire for women when exposed to the colour red"
Psychology Today write-up: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog...-suits-her

Sure... all things being equal. Men are very visual when it comes to attraction. |

^^ yep all true... Facebook Fuels Growth With Games as Users Flock to ‘Mafia Wars’ Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Facebook Inc. is tapping virtual farmers, mafia dons and online pets to generate cash from the social-networking Web site’s 300 million users. The company is testing a payment system to gain a cut each time an online-game player buys a digital tractor, weapon or hat on the site. That would give Facebook a piece of the hundreds of millions of dollars that are being pulled in by Zynga Inc., creator of “Farmville” and “Mafia Wars,” and Playfish Inc., maker of “Pet Society.” The social-games market will almost triple to $2 billion by 2012, estimates ThinkEquity LLC. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=aktPPHCAdOQg

I was curious how much damage a nuclear-armed Hezb'Allah could do, and found this nifty application:
HYDESim-- High-Yield Detonation Effects Simulator
The most powerful nuclear bomb ever developed was by the Russians, a 50000kt yield. Most nukes are designed to be placed on missiles and are much smaller. |

Oh, brilliant! Consider that article bookmarked.
Came across Darwin Tunes: a Music Evolution program
Evolution starts with two original Adam & Eve songs which "had sex" and exchanged bits of their code so that their daughters are unique mixtures of their parents’ codes. These daughters then “mutate”, with random changes in their code.
The result is that every generation of songs is subtly different from the one that preceded it. The selection process comes from us, the listeners, who rate the "attractiveness" of random songs. Songs with the highest scores "reproduce" and make new, better songs.
Can't wait to track the progess and listen to the progression.
Amazing. Go participate!! |

JH, I have to agree with almost that entire essay. We need to amend domestic law in the US. Marriage just isn't what it used to be. Cool Esquilax...

We need to amend domestic law in the US. Marriage just isn't what it used to be. I still believe love between a man and a woman can be a beautiful and sacred thing.
What's almost as good is that love is fair-- every person gets what they deserve. It is almost like karma. Sexual desire reveals exactly who people are. What Jung wrote about the anima and the animus perhaps has been under-appreciated.
Ayn Rand perhaps had it right when she wrote Tell me what a man finds sexually attractive and I will tell you his entire philosophy of life. Show me the woman he sleeps with and I will tell you his valuation of himself. This also applies to Rand's childless and detestable personal life, ironically.

Recession or Mancession?
The Jobless Gender Gap
excerpt: As of the end of October, the U.S. had lost 7.3 million jobs in this Great Recession. Men account for 5.3 million of that loss. The shift is so dramatic that women now constitute 49.9% of the work force and will soon outnumber men. |

Hey JH! I was trying to click on the link but it just sends me to the "reply" page. Sounds like an interesting article though. That's really sad, those statistics :o( This is just my humble opinion, but I do think it correlates with the demise of the morals and family unit in our country. |

okay, second try
The Jobless Gender Gap
jw -- Makes sense, there can't be patriarchy when patriarchs are an endangered species.
Feminists won't declare victory though until employed women are making more than employed men, though that won't happen until women select remunerative careers. This might happen by default though-- as manufacturing becomes more efficient, it will become like farming, once believed to be essential but now only a small percentage of the economy. The service sector will reign supreme, complete with office ettiquete, pretending to be nice to customers, sensitivity training, and other nauseating aspects of corporate life like casual Fridays and decorating for holidays. In my nightmare feminist apocalypse, everyone will talk to each other in an indirect, evasive, unmanly way, like Lumbergh from Office Space. The horror! The horror!

Thank you for the article link.
I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday...
haha I love that movie!
I wonder if part of the stats have to do with some American men not wanting to take lower paying jobs, which most women find the salaries okay or standard? I'm not saying that's the key to all the change but more so think it's a multifaceted abyss taken up by many different opinions and possibilities. I'm not the kind of woman who believes in the traditional feminist movement per se whereby taking over or infringing on a man's rights is okay, that's hogwash. Gender equality in the workplace sounds nice, though with everything you gain, you loose something and vice versa. I believe there is a place for traditional roles regarding home, work, child-rearing and probably a good medium too, though I don't think we've gotten that balanced yet with this. Unfortunately, there are politicians who've used this subject as a catalyst for their own agendas and it makes it such a bloody mess, pins females and males against one another (and not in a good way haha! gutter ball, sorry) |

Uuuuuuuugh. I worked a temp job at State Farm once - if you've never heard of it, it's a pretty big insurance company...and around where I live, the center of the brain drain. I was only there for a month, but it set my teeth on edge. The floor I worked on was predominately female...and they had that fake niceness that you can see right through. >.> Every time someone addressed me, they'd use my first name every sentence....which for some reason just annoys the crap out of me. To be perfectly honest, I detest working with other women in an office setting. There's always this sugar-coated poisonous feel to the place....unless you have a couple of those blunt outspoken ladies who just curse a blue streak out of nowhere. That lightens the tension considerably....but they're not a fixture at uppity, politically correct places like State Farm. It might be pointless to say, but ENFPs are not very welcome creatures at State Farm either. O.O Working faster than some unspoken law dictates while managing to carry on a conversation....and if any mistakes are made, catching and correcting them right away.... Yea...frowned upon. The one time I didn't have some obscure piece of information that was linked onto my computer before a massive system crash that killed all of my links.....I was reported to the floor supervisor for not being prepared.... And that evening my temp contact informed me that my employment was over. So again....Uuuuuuuugh. |
