Nope. Not just science. Just anything interesting.
In the interests of sharing the knowledge (and extending procrastination possibilities) I propose a thread containing links to interesting articles, research etc that we come across. Maybe spark some discussion/debate |

I went to a presentation by an astrophysicist Sunday. This is way cool, and it is hard data too. Keep in mind that each of these galaxies contains billions of stars.

http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpps/news/dpgo-Study-Women-Can-Smell-Attraction-in-Sweat-mb-20091229_5316628 Study: Women Can Smell Attraction in Sweat Updated: Tuesday, 29 Dec 2009, 10:56 AM EST Published : Tuesday, 29 Dec 2009, 10:55 AM EST By MIKE BRODY (MYFOX NATIONAL) - The smell of men's sweat can tell women if they are attracted to them, according to a new study . The study showed that the smell of a man's sweat differs according to what mood he is in and women can pick up on changes that indicate attraction, the Telegraph reports . Researchers led by Dr. Denise Chen, assistant professor of psychology at Rice University, introduced two types of male sweat to 19 women in their 20s -- one type was labeled "normal," the other "sexual." Sweat was gathered from polyester pads attached to the armpits of the men. The "normal" sweat was taken during a 20-minute session in which the men were asked to watch educational videos. Then the men watched 20 minutes of an erotic video, during which the "sexual" sweat was gathered. The women were exposed to the two different scents and researchers indicated that the brain activity of the women showed that they recognized the scents and responded to them. Dr. Chen said the "sexual" sweat lit up different regions of the participants' brains, leading to the conclusion that the female brain is capable of recognizing the smell of a man who is attracted to her. A similar study published in 2007 in The Journal of Neuroscience and conducted by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley, found that women who sniffed a chemical found in male sweat experienced "heightened mood, physiological arousal and subjective sexual arousal." However, a paper entitled "The Smell Report" published on the Social Issues Research Center Web site , claims that men who believe that their "macho," sweaty, body odor is attractive to women are deluding themselves. |

thanks, Just. Check this out: Do colleges redline Asian-Americans? SAT SCORES aren’t everything. But they can tell some fascinating stories. Take 1,623, for instance. That’s the average score of Asian-Americans, a group that Daniel Golden - editor at large of Bloomberg News and author of “The Price of Admission’’ - has labeled “The New Jews.’’ After all, much like Jews a century ago, Asian-Americans tend to earn good grades and high scores. And now they too face serious discrimination in the college admissions process. Notably, 1,623 - out of a possible 2,400 - not only separates Asians from other minorities (Hispanics and blacks average 1,364 and 1,276 on the SAT, respectively). The score also puts them ahead of Caucasians, who average 1,581. And the consequences of this are stark. Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade, who reviewed data from 10 elite colleges, writes in “No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal’’ that Asian applicants typically need an extra 140 points to compete with white students. In fact, according to Princeton lecturer Russell Nieli, there may be an “Asian ceiling’’ at Princeton, a number above which the admissions office refuses to venture. http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2010/02/08/do_colleges_redline_asian_americans/?p1=Well_MostPop_Emailed1 |

http://www.toomanyaborted.com/ Abortion is not a me issue. It’s not a you issue. It’s not a personal issue, nor is it just a woman’s issue. It is a human issue. And today, with over 40% of all black pregnancies ending in induced abortion, it is a human crisis.1 The ‘Endangered Species’ campaign highlights the disproportionate impact of abortion on the black community. The Radiance Foundation has decried abortion’s impact on our entire society, regardless of race, but this particular campaign attempts to dig deeper and focus on abortion in an historical context with real present-day ramifications. This isn’t black versus white or me versus you. It’s the truth versus the lie. The truth is that abortion kills an innocent human life. It’s easier to speak in euphemisms, but the miracle of life is threatened every day by a false ideology that dupes women into believing their very biology is a threat to them. This Birth Control Movement turned Abortion-on-Demand propaganda was a product, in large part, of Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood and an elite American (married to oil tycoon Noah Slee). The perpetuation of the lie of ‘Reproductive Freedom’ has been championed, in particular, by America’s elite (of any race). It was an elitist mentality that forged the pseudoscience of eugenics, that drove America’s race-based segregation laws, developed early and present-day immigration policy (i.e. Immigration Act of 1924) and was the bedrock of the Birth Control now-turned Abortion Industry. According to Planned Parenthood’s founder, Margaret Sanger, “we are paying for…an ever increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all.”2 Her eugenic Birth Control philosophy, to prevent the ‘unfit’, ‘feeble-minded’, ‘poor’ or ‘unwanted’, would have eliminated Abraham Lincoln, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Ben Carson, and Oprah Winfrey…just to name a few. Today, abortion kills more African-Americans, per year, than heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, accidents, homicides, suicide, and cancer–combined.3 Abortions in the black community occur at 3x the rate of those among the white population and 2x that of all other races combined.4 The truth screams loud and clear–we are killing our very future. |

I has a question about that last article saul. >.> How does that ratio compare to the number of pregnancies....and to the amount of unprotected sex per race? And how many of those abortions are from the same women? I kind of feel like I'm seeing skewed information. I'm just saying....if there are fewer pregnancies for other races that use protection, then of course the percentage of abortions will be lower too. Honestly, I personally wouldn't abort a child....but anti-abortionists scare the crap out of me, so I wouldn't label myself among those that see nothing wrong with violence to achieve their ends. And illegalizing something that desperate women will still seek would only be dangerous. >< Rusty hangers in an alley? |

I don't think there is any way to find accurate information about that. Check out the website. It had an affect on me. There are solid factual points they are making that need to be addressed. Mmyyyyyyyyyyy cupcakes bring all the boys to th' yard...
Hmmm... I never trust pseudo-statistics stated on websites. There might be research out there that backs up those numbers, but the error often lies in the interpretation of a statistic, or taking the numbers out of context. Reminds me of The Vatican wanting to stop the distribution of condoms in Africa, as research carried out by Harvard University found higher rates of HIV/AIDS in areas where condom intervention was greatest. There's no disputing that statistic, but I doubt Harvard said it was a simple cause & effect relationship!
I found an article in Psychology Today called a Field Guide To The Loner, looking at introverts. It's a good insight into our world. |

*There are more African Americans under correctional control today -- in prison or jail, on probation or parole -- than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began.
*As of 2004, more African American men were disenfranchised (due to felon disenfranchisement laws) than in 1870, the year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified, prohibiting laws that explicitly deny the right to vote on the basis of race.
* A black child born today is less likely to be raised by both parents than a black child born during slavery. The recent disintegration of the African American family is due in large part to the mass imprisonment of black fathers. |
