I'm curious to know under what circumstances would you consider joining the military?? |

I thought about joining the Coast Guard for awhile briefly. It was very briefly but I thought about it. It was kind of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" thing that got in the way and that I value creativity, individuality, and ingenuity, which I don't feel are often highly appreciated in the military. I wouldn't join any other branch, but I would consider the Coast Guard because there is potentially the notion of helping people...and I'm a really good swimmer. |

^^ Well that's beyond unlikely. Can you imagine an ENFP drill sergeant? "So, just to mix it up a little let's say we play charades?" I really can't think of a situation which would compel me to join the military. Even if we were being invaded, I think I'd just be part of civilian resistance. |

Yeah, me too. Plus, I'm kind of a pacifist. I think.

I think that is why he would want you as a drill sergeant. |

What if a country started killing puppies and kittens and said that all ENFPs had to live in solitary isolation for the rest of their days? |

I guess there might come a time when I would fight back... Or I might prefer to run away, or find some way to sabotage rather than kill. Or, maybe I would focus on rescue. Or politics. I would try everything before actually harming life....unless I got too emotionally involved and became violent impetuously. |

find some way to sabotage rather than kill Something tells me a lot of ENFPs would prefer this route... Using Ne to hypothesize possible ways to "set back" the defenses of the enemy. This would allow for acceptance by Fi. I see it. |

Plus, civilian interaction can be more of a group event. Actually fighting in a war seems like a more solitary event for some reason. There isn't much individuality in putting on a uniform. |

Mmhmm. Personally, I'd much prefer infiltration and charming the enemy [blame spy movies], the human interaction associated with civilian sabotage. The idea of detached serving and dispassionate bloodshed makes me shudder. |

^^ I would guess more I / ENTJ and INFP. But honestly, beware to the person who tries to bully an ENFP, or worse yet, her INFP friend. You will likely get a tongue-lashing you won't soon forget. Although it will probably be followed by an apology. |

@ Purple Giraffe: Even if they were killing puppies and kitties and I was faced with a life of solitude, I really don't think I would join the military. I would have to make my own plan that coincided with my values and my best sense of survival. In this case I may just take all of the people I care about, and a good handful of puppies and kitties up to the boundary waters and evade! I don't think I could ever be a spy. I'm way too transparent. But I could take up arms if necessary. I certainly don't relish the idea of killing someone. But if it's between me or him.... |

Interesting when people talk about the military they only think of war and fighting. What about the humanitarian work it does and its advancements in technology? |

I probably will be joining the army if my financial situation does not change dramatically and soon. |

I'm thinking about going into the Navy after college. I'd like to work as a Marine Biologist for them, as they employ a large number of scientists. Plus, I can use the GI Bill to try for med school afterwards. My dad was in the army for fourteen years before I was born, and I've always been advised not to have anything to do with the military by him, but I've always wanted to travel to faraway places and wear a nice uniform Honestly, I couldn't be bothered with a combat position in all honesty, even though I am fairly handy with a pistol, I don't think I could ever shoot a living thing. |

I would never consider enlisting. Ever. I am not good with discipline, authority or structure. I think most traditions and ceremonies are stupid. I like to pick out my own clothes. I think I would be in constant tears with if a drill sergeant insulted me. I would go crazy with no privacy or alone time. If I got orders to do something, I'd need to know "why" before I felt like doing it. I'd love to be a spy, but I can't keep a secret. |

Enlist? I've thought about the marines before. But see, I've got a science degree, so I'm more likely to end up doing defense research than actual enlisting. Even if I was drafted I'd probably end up in a non-combat position anyway (there are too many brains in my head), so it's really kind of moot. |
