The final version of the bill also provides, in sub-section(e), that "Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing law or authorities relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States."

Obama is a man without substance. He is a feeble waif of a man who's only strength is saying what everyone wants to hear. He pretty much followed up his signing of it with statements about repealing parts..... It doesn't really say much about his character that he'd be willing to sign something he didn't fully agree with, though. "Well....I wanted a hamburger with pickles and ketchup.... I don't really like onions, but I suppose I can pick them off later." As it is...and with Obama as president, I honestly don't think this legislature holds any weight. However....whoever follows in his footsteps may change that. >.> The Republican candidates are crazy....and they could very easily whip up a frenzy of anti-terrorist panic the likes of Cold War McCarthyism and use the NDAA as a means to their "terrorist-looking" witch hunt. -.- Racist bastards.

What do you want the guy to do realistically? The most stable and reliable leaders are the least ideologue and most tempered. He's playing the hand that was dealt to him in a measured way. He can't have what he wants nor can we. It's a balancing act and always will be. You want onions? Well face it, half of the population doesn't. Unless you're willing to go dictator then there has to be unsatisfactory compromises.

Caprice,

There are alot of things he could do. For the starters, he's a President. You are not. If he's incapable, at least he could step down. Another thing, he could follow the Constitution and that would be enough. There is nothing new that happens today that wasn't happening back when the Constitution was signed. It's not like you are re-discovering the continent of America. The Constitution has it all. Just follow it. That should have been enough.

No, there really wasn't much he could do, it was a veto proof majority. He could have symbolically vetoed it and the rest of the bill which included a military budget and veteran's funding and sit back and watch while "Obama vetoed veteran's funding..." ads crushed him and put the people who actually wrote it (GOP) into office. Without line item veto power, this sort of political maneuvering will always be effective. Americans are by and large stupid and the system is broken.

I see where you are coming from Caprice. He saved the veterans yes, but made everyone (including veterans) target practice material too. I guess being left moneyless is better than dead? Then whom did he save you said again?

By signing Martial Law bill into Act, he also put someone else into office too. Now he will be remembered as president who declared Martial Law officially.

No, I'm not saying he saved the veterans, I'm saying it's a political game. You attach something that completely stinks to something that has to be passed and that will be passed. He could have attempted to veto it, it's just highly unlikely that he would have succeeded since passing a military budget is considered basically mandatory for the country to function. You don't have to agree with that, but I think the vast majority of politicians in this country do and it's their votes that count.

If you want to claim he's lacking in charisma or clout, fine. It sure doesn't help when people unreasonably pin things on him that are beyond his control. If one considers civil liberties violated by gun control policies or paying too high of taxes then it's reasonable to look to the Democrats (but realistically any offset you get from lower Federal taxes is lost in increased local taxes/property taxes, fees etc... so). But the hawkish attempts to chip away civil liberties in the name of national security and law enforcement are GOP and any attempt to spin it otherwise is smoke and mirrors.

And I know some of you are Ron Paul supporters, and while i respect his consistency and many of his stances, I don't see him having even as much political leverage as Obama were he to be elected. Executive power and personal views/ideology only carry so much weight.

I can appreciate that being the president isn't a giant power-trip. Frankly, the way it ages men in 4 years makes me glad I'll never have the position. I didn't expect Obama to ever live up to his grand pedestal of Change...but the thing is, if your strength is being a cool voice of reason and calm, then go with it. The greatest power is often just having the confidence to make others believe you have it - his campaign was built on that concept....yet he wavers and shows weakness to congress that they exploit. Sometimes fighting a battle means having the will to not budge...with that polite, aloof smile of his wielded like a weapon of "I can sit here all day and wait for you to remove those onions."

Probably. If yes, the white Obama (Romney) is on his way to replace him.
