Mark David Chapman at Wikipedia

I wanted to know what ENFPs think of this guy, what he did, and the fact that he's still in jail after the basic 20 years. Seems to me he's being treated differently because he killed a celebrity... and that he was basically a kid when he did it (yes he was 25, but he still strikes me as having been very immature).

Of course, being out of jail would likely be very inconvenient for him even if someone didn't kill him.

In NY, 2nd Degree Murder is codified under Penal Law 125.25. It is classified as an A-1 Felony and carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment.

The length of time is going to depend on the violence of the case and how much of a threat the individual is considered. Shooting anyone 5 times in the back, regardless of their celebrity, is pretty violent....and there's no guarantee that he wouldn't be a threat to anyone else. Sure, they might've argued that his waiting for police was an act of contrition or something like that, but he would've been better off sticking with the insanity plea. >.> Pleading guilty gave the legal system full force to apply the maximum sentence when a not-guilty plea could have given him some wiggle room for a plea bargain and less jail time.

20-30 years for 2nd degree murder sounds reasonable.

Except that he's most likely never going to be let out.

He sounds more like an idealistic fool at the time. Offended/feeling betrayed at Lennon not practicing what he preached.

If such feelings made him a threat back then, how many other people are there really that he could've been passionate enough about, to object so seriously to their actions? Besides, like I said, seems like he was a kid at the time.
If I personally had to guess, I'd say he's no longer a danger to anyone. 20+ years is a very long time to think and evolve. He's most likely nothing like the person he was then.

... and if we're talking about vague potential threat, I'm sure most of us could be brought to killing another human being given circumstances we individually believed were important enough. So I'd say most of us are potential threats, even if we haven't had reason to yet. I'd almost consider a human incapable of killing another person under any circumstances to be defective. Soldiers fight and kill for causes they believe in... often not even because they believe in the cause, but just because they're being paid to do it.

A guy I knew was having a fight with his girlfriend, and in his frustration and anger, he took out his gun and blew his own head off. He was a pretty cool guy. Emotions make people do stupid things from time to time. Doesn't mean that they'd always do that or that they can't mature with experience.

Thats why I don't carry one or have one in the house. I think I would do something stupid and hurt someone one. (i live in TX very easy to get a weapon here)

I never said our legal system was perfect or that I agreed with it, just that I get the why. I watched an episode of TruTV about a guy who murdered his wife and got life in prison without the possibility of parole.....and got out on good behavior in like 5 years. How much sense does that make? O.O You can get life imprisonment. No parole. But get out on good behavior??

I blame the INTJs. They need to go fix the system. >.> And no going all creepy and power-mad Death Note style!

The Dark Side is strong in us.

Well give me time, and lets see

I have an increasing objection to the legal system here, and the way businesses run. I just need to have the power to do something about it
And to mobilize the N forces. And find me some XSTJ servants

The new slogan "What was is irrelevant, it doesn't matter that things might be better today than they were yesterday. All that matters is that things be better tomorrow than they are today!"
