My feeling is that gay, bi-sexual, etc., people are over-represented online. I know Kinsey said that they make up 10% of the population, but that figure has been disputed by other scientists who say it is actually less than 5%. Maybe some gay people are not part of a local community, so they reach out online?

The numbers are roughly:

5-10% of men identify as gay
2-5% of women identify as lesbian

Fewer women identify as lesbian because it is so much more culturally acceptable (at least in the US) for women to identify as bisexual and have a more fluid sexuality. Sexuality for men is generally much more structured and rigid in its construct.

You are absolutely right, Anna. More gays are online because it is often more difficult to get a good community of gays together in real life, so they go on-line. The internet serves as a great way to connect people who are otherwise not connected.

Hmm. This is a fun thread.

I am openly gay. I'm a lesbian, I learned that the moment i accepted myself i was much more willing to show others who i was and inspire them to see me as a person rather than my sexuality. Although, I would like to mention that i will only tell people i'm gay if i am going to tell a funny story and I don't want my audience to sit their uncomfortable in the ambiguity. LEt's just say i come out often constantly meeting new people means constantly taking about my life.ANd my life is kind of gay, wonderfully so.
