You know, that actually sounds like an attractive proposition to me. I do that everyday with people in my life. But the problem is, I'm a big spender too.

Are you frugal with a lot of stuff, but then go and spend alot on a few things?

I'm a teacher of English as a Second Language in Japan, before this I was a tour guide and submarine co-pilot... Looking for my next career. I get bored easily.

Re: spending- I suck too I've been out here a whole year. I have abotu $2000 USD every month after all my bills, and I haven't saved a cent all year! But I've been to India and Hong Kong and I'm all lined up to go to Australia in December. Travel is the only reason I even care how much money I work for.

Here's an excerpt from a similar thread I replied to:

"Jobs that are open-ended but heavily technology-based work wonders for ENFPs. You're now in an environment where if you have enough willpower and creativity, you can do almost anything. I always thought that the coolest superhero was Green Lantern, and this is the closest I'll ever get. It gets even better if you're in some kind of leader position or running your own shop since let's face it, ENFPs don't take detailed direction terribly well. "

Couldn't agree more. There's very little I don't find interesting as long as I'm given a bit of freedom and flexibility to put my own spin on it. A lot of my schoolwork really frustrates me, not because I can't do it/understand it, but because I'm forced to perform a set way of doing it. If there's one thing I don't like, it's fill-the-gap style teaching - that's just about the only thing that will make me feel bored. I like to take something more open-ended, and see where I go with it.

I love computers, but can't work in front of one, because I get distracted too easily. I got my degree in English, but had an interest in journalism. I was editor-in-chief of the school paper in college, and I liked being in control, but it was pretty stressful. I currently work summers surveying for endangered species on a contract basis with a friend of mine. It's really an awesome job, because my boss is a good friend and we can talk for hours on our way to and from a project site and keep each other entertained. Plus, he's a mentor to me and taught my everything I know about biology. The work is.. okay. We march up and down fields in grid patterns in the hot summer sun. Sometimes spending several days a week away from home, working 11 days in a row at times, or at the least getting up before dawn and driving for hours to a project site regularly. I make great money at it ($65/hr last summer), but it's still only 3-4 or so months of work out of the year, because of surveying protocols. We're attempting to branch out and take on more workers under us. My goal for next year is to make $30k in the summer, so I can move out and support myself.

I applied for a job, which I REALLY hope I get, because it sounds awesome. I'd be leading educational tours of a wildlife preserve to kids and teaching them about nature. On the days without tours, I'd go do work improving land and helping do research. It would only be 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, and the best part is it would be only for the school year, so it would end around the time I start surveying.

Another interest of mine is non-profit event planning, fund raising, or directing. I really like helping people, and the skeletal structure of non-profit organizations means I would be able to employ my multitude of talents in my position.

I found linking up my ENFP skills with an SJ (for instance, an ESFJ I know) works incredibly well in running a business. I come up with ideas, and he makes sure we get things done.

I'm going back to school to major in Sociology. Hoping to work as a Child Protective Specialist (or any child welfare/youth or senior services positions), counseling, community affairs, or work in the prison system. Basically, something in that realm. . In the future, I want to have my own business too.

I'm 28 and have changed my profession 3 times. I graduated from college with a dual degree in Political Science (Comparative Politics) and Sociology. When I was 20, I wanted to be a photojournalist, or work for some kind of international NGO like Amnesty International but had no idea how to do that.

Instead my first job out of college I worked as an adjuster in workers compensation insurance helping people who were injured at work get a new job and dispensing their benefits. It was fine, but I was more creative than that and after 2 years I started looking elsewhere. So I went into Marketing.. which was fun, but it was for a company I thought was boring (medical device company). I left that, and decided to go into Fashion. The fashion industry is really competitive and hard to jump into with an insurance background, but I have strong creative tendencies and a good eye for things. I got a stint working for a Danish designer as her U.S. showroom manager, and helped grow her company in the U.S., traveling to New York and Copenhagen, and making her collections look visually appealing in displays, at tradeshows and during fashion week. I LOVED it, and I loved the travelling that came with it... but alas, I did not get along too well with my boss (not the designer, but my American boss). So I left. Now, I'm at a crossroads with what to do with my life. I'm working a job right now in Property Management, just to pay my bills and buy some time to think. I'm thinking of going back to graduate school to study Educational/Counseling Psychology and become a therapist/counselor for high school and college age students. At 28, the thought of going back to school for 5 years to get a PhD, while not having very much in my savings account makes me feel extremely stressed out. On top of that, I'm not sure how I'd get into any of the schools I want to go to because my background in Fashion and Marketing doesn't make sense... and schools are extremely competitive right now with this economy. It is really stressful and I keep wondering how I got here.

Part of me wants to keep on the track I'm at for the sake of maintaining the "momentum", but part of me is telling me to get the ball rolling NOW and just start a program. I'm doing a lot of volunteer work to make myself look attractive to schools, but I'm a little scared that I'll change my mind again, halfway through school. I've also fantasized about doing the following:

Opening up a Mexican restaurant in London or Paris (people there would DIE if they tasted what a burrito SHOULD taste like, and I'd be rolling in $$).
Opening up a spa where you can go in and give the spa a list of your errands so while you pamper yourself, someone can do your groceries/drop off your drycleaning, etc.
Opening up a nail salon at an airport.
Starting up a medical clinic that incorporates alternative medicine and Western medicine under one roof, and have a "membership" format, so anyone can join.
Starting up a website that links big corporations, small companies, and curious students with direct one-on-one internships. Sort of like a Monster.com, except cleaner, easier to navigate, and more "independently" run..

I know I could be AMAZING in any of these, but I just don't know how to get the ball rolling without any capital... and I would want a partner to help bolster my confidence :-/

So, for now... I'm just trolling this forum because being around people who think like me makes me feel less alienated. :-)

LIBRARIANS

Just think about it. I'm a librarian, and have loved every job I've had since graduation. You can move around easily - anywhere, really. You can work with people (school, public, university) or away from people (digital/technical, cataloging, archiving, etc). There is a broad range of responsibilities and daily activities. It never gets old - cause the books, the clients, the computers, the information itself is always changing. You can have the joy of helping people find things that will be important or pleasurable to them. If you're so inclined, you can run the whole show after a few years - run the library, hire your own staff, make it into whatever environment is happiest and most productive.

And the advice previously posted - to find something you like to do and become uncommonly good at it - that applies here as well. To really enjoy your career choice, I recommend putting a lot of yourself into it. Write for journals. Get involved in grant writing. Seek out related community members, projects, and businesses. Network! Take classes every two years - don't let your skills and knowledge get rusty, enjoy learning the newest software, hearing the newest theories on the practice. Read a lot, especially in your area of interest. Find out who reads a lot in the areas that interest you less, so you can frequently contact them when seeking information. Bask in the benefits of the job... which usually include generous holidays, sweet hours, full medical and retirement. Indulge in your artsy side - get musicians, poets, gamers, clubs, artists and writers to come to your library and promote them.

Anyways, I could go on all day here. Needless to say, I love my job and highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with career choices. It's a Masters program, and usually it won't matter too much what you get your undergraduate in...

Good luck with your quest for career satisfaction! It's a worthy goal for sure.

This sounds really awesome.  I was thinking about medical librarian at one time.  I love the idea of working with/helping people and yet being left alone when my batteries are burnt out and my Virgo analytical side kicks in and I just want to put crap in order lol

Hi masa! I found that numbers and accounting and really anything that requires putting stuff in order or analyzing data is something that catches my eye because I'm a Virgo sun & moon sign. Now, I don't believe in the hocus pocus of horoscopes, but the personality profile of a Virgo truly fits me very well, but I'm also an ENFP so I need that creative thing going on. You could check out Financial Advisor jobs which would incorporate the finance and also counseling that ENFPs are adept to traditionally. The creator of the site may chime in as he's into finance and could give you a better idea of the opportunities for you in that realm :o)

A lot of ENFPs consider going into business for themselves, but plz make sure it's the right TYPE of business for you first!

When I started an internet marketing company with my roommates in college it felt like the best job in the world. we were 4 buddies who had no bosses we were accountable to, no set work schedule, totally results-oriented work environment, and had great fun doing it. a couple years later, we grew to over 30 programmers on the payroll, and the 4 of us went from working the details on the technical side to managing a team. as our company grew, we started to become managers, which, let me be frank, was fun at first as we imagined ourselves becoming masters of the universe, but draining in the long run. As a manager, i found that I was literally turning into Peter's boss from Office Space. I had to go around and make sure all the employees were doing their jobs, coming in on time, not wasting time, etc. When one of your crew doesn't show up, you have to spend all day listening to whatever bullshit excuses he comes up with about his dead mom or why they hate some other employee in the office. my job is literally to make sure other people are doing their jobs. *sigh* This kind of stuff wears on you day after day. Two of my 4 buddies quit, so the task of running the ship came down to just the two of us.

Anyway, I'm just ranting now, but what I wanted to say was that the TYPE of self-employment matters a LOT. I personally think ENFPs are well-suited for starting companies where they can sort of freelance, where they are not MANAGING other people, and something small enough that they can run it the way they like. Graphic design comes to mind. So does consulting. Something where the focus is on them and their work. As much as teamwork is crucial to success, at the end of the day, I found I strongly disliked just managing my crew and not "producing" anything of value to our clients. I wanted to add something innovative or creative to the process, but managing even just 30 people makes a 9-to-5 workday speed by so fast, you wonder what the heck just happened. In addition, your workday is never truly 9-5 since servers can go down or electricity goes out, or a client is pissed off that his ads don't show up frequently enough, etc - and this can happen at all hours of the day, even at 4 AM. Not Fun.

I also discovered that the money I'm making does not make me happy. I make more than 99% of kids my age. If we sell now, I'd be retiring in fashion way before the age of 30. But the drain on the soul is just not worth the money. In the near future, I'm considering either selling my interest to my buddy and getting out, or talking him into selling to another company and then setting up my own independent internet marketing consultancy. I'd keep maybe 2 or 3 assistants or secretaries MAX, and try to actually enjoy my life by having the free time to do what i want to do.

When your business starts to resemble a corporation too much, you start to feel it wear you down, even though it may have been your own creation.
