From what I've seen there deoesn't seem to be a PM option on the forum. Is there any way I can contact one of the Admins? |

I don't know how to contact admins. We are supposed to be getting PM soon, but we don't presently have it. |

I know this is a very SJ-y thing... but why doesn't the forum use phpBB? It is a widely used software... and it gets updated, so it is just a a matter of taking down the forum from the internet, then installing the new version, then bringing it up again. I think it is free. I went to their website and i didn't find any "buy" button... Btw, in another forum i was in, Spam went down a lot once we installed a new version of phpBB. Plus you can make moderators, it has private messaging, blocking, etc... everything you need... (and more)
I know We ENFPs want to do everything in our own way... but sometimes it is just more convenient to use a software that is freely available and worked on for us so that we have more time for other stuff... The real problem when making software is never the initial costs (time and/or money), but the upkeep costs... developing new versions etc.
Just a suggestion. If the "working on the website" does not work the way it was planned, maybe it is better to use phpBB or something like it that is freely available and gets updated for us? We would loose some of the individuality of this forum, but again that leaves more time for other stuff. And i think it is also possible to individualize phpBB... (just looked, there are user-created modifications and a lot of styles available, i think there will be something that fits!)

i never did understand why he went with dnn instead of a more widely used forum software, this pm update must be pretty spectacular, its being about 6 months in the making |

Can this be the new "INTJ Challenge." Saul might be busy, but what about Psyko. Let's pour some INTJ magic into this place. |

Most of us could update it in about 2 hours. The question is what do you do with the existing posts and user DB if you can't merge it. |

Most of us could update it in about 2 hours. The question is what do you do with the existing posts and user DB if you can't merge it. Good point. The user DB is no big problem i think. Compared to the time we spend in this forum anyway, it would not be such a big deal for everyone to register again. The posts would be a problem... i mean we have a LOT of posts containing a LOT of information around here. It would be a shame if all of that was "lost". The bar at the top can be brought into the new forum as a top bar... the only thing that would change is the forum itself. I agree, it should be clear what happens to the posts if the forum is somehow changed. |

In 24 years you will be 2000 years old. I think you don't have much to worry about as you are the oldest person alive. Lucky you!

There are bound to be a few other *nix engineers as well me on this forum, so I'm sure we could JUST manage to build something useable.. |

I apologize guys! I'm sorry we're not on the forum very often and I'm especially sorry about the lack of 'modern' features, we need instant messaging and private messaging, no doubt about that. What can I say, it's been a very busy last year. We are newlyweds but that's not the only reason things are moving slow, Saul moved here to Europe with me, and with the move and everything we've been slammed with work etc.
That said, Saul did pay one of his programming friends to fix and update the forum but it didn't work out for some reason. And even if I'm a brilliant INTJ, he,he there's no way in hell I'm getting into programming or researching stuff like that, I have other strengths I'm afraid
Anyway, will talk to Saul about it and we'll come up with something good after a month of upcoming travels.
Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions, they will be revised. We'll be happy to review suggestions, just post them here (detailed,) and Saul or his friend will look into it. Free features are a plus! It's not as easy to change the forum platform and features now, as we will lose all the old posts and all of our content without hiring a database expert. We did try and poured a few hundred dollars into it, but it didn't work as promised, so we're back to square one... If someone think they can do it, please holler and Saul will get in touch with you.
Sit tight guys

What exactly is the existing database? Even if it's some nice SQL DB, it will still be a nightmare moving everything over... Likely you are stuck with just transferring the users, and even that will take some time. If it were me, I'd just take it as a lesson and install something upgradeable and just move on. That will hurt though. |

@incrediblemind: Probably the best solution. Transferring users is not a big problem i think... We can just register again, it is a thing of 5 minutes. It might be good to start a few thread-stubs once the new forum has gone online... (Like "Helpful ENFP tips" etc. )
I am just wondering... maybe the old forum can be kept as an archive until the stickies have been moved? (Nothing can be posted anymore) While at the same time the new forum is filled with posts. |

Reading this thread is like operation mindfuck. On a serious note, generally speaking the "user" db and the "posts" db is one in the same, unless activeforums is being odd, you'll need to find out how to import the whole db into phpbb for example, if you can't, you may need to import to another type of forum, then from there import to phpbb(or whatever you choose). |
